I cannot be coherent at this hour. Just look at them. Guh T___T <3

One of the best things to watch while drinking the first mug of coffee of the day! <33

Oh hey, Alistair meta.

impressioniste:

I’ve been thinking more about DAO stuff lately, and while I always thought Alistair was okay as a character, I never dug too deeply into meta-analysis for him up to this point. Also, whitethornwolf asked me for Alistair meta almost a year ago now (I bet you thought I forgot :x), so I thought I’d finally give her what she asked for.

Anyway, I was thinking about how people constantly criticize him for being flaky, or whiny, or emotional, or naive. And maybe he is, to an extent, but I don’t think he’s overly so, or unjustifiably so.

His whole life, he’s been bounced around like a pinball, shuffled around to suit other people’s needs and wants. He’s got all these responsibilities and things expected of him, and yet he’s kept in the dark and never really taught the ins and outs of much of anything. He has no real roots, and makes a lot of mistakes because he’s blundering around blindly more often than not.

I would even go further on the PC-point. He not only respects you for taking lead.

I think there is somwhow the hope in him to experience the same things from now on. The pc is not keeping him out. S/He is including him, sharing the knoledge they gather.

The pc is taking him serious. S/He is no father figure like Duncan has been. S/He is the first real friend he ever had. He tells us thet both the rich and the poor kids hated him for what he is. Even his first father figure, Eamon, had to give him away because of this. And the Warden just stayed the same after knowing that he is the bastad prince. A friend who he considers loyal. And If s/he is recruiting Loghain, Alistat feels betrayed again. Like it has been his whole life. The one person, he considered he considered a freind, something like a family, a sibling maybe, if you don’t romance him, or his love if you do, makes a decision, that hurts him so much, that he can’t fogive it.

Again he seems to be the little boy no one cares to listen to. He thought they both had wittnesed the same things and came to the same conclusions. He trusted the Warden and now s/he decides to let the one person live that Alistair focused on his whole hate the last months. The person that has destroyed his perfect little world within the Wardens. His surrogate family.

I can perfectly understand that he takes his leave here. “If my opinion is nothing worth to you and you don’t care about all the people that have died because of him, you are no person I want to support.”

(Okay, I hope I didn’t make any mistakes that make it impossible to understand waht I wanted to say.)

I’ll go one further:
I hate the Wardens.
Their secrecy rules directly contributed to everything that happened in DA:O

Yep. The Wardens get romanticized quite a bit, but the fact that Duncan killed Jory just because he decided not to join their super secret boy band should be a big tip off of their M.O. If they made it clear why a Warden was needed to slay the archdemon, it’s possible Loghain wouldn’t have tried to destroy them all. If they were more open in general, it’s possible they wouldn’t be greeted with such hostility and suspicion by everyone.
Furthermore, the Wardens keep countless secrets from their own recruits. That doesn’t exactly beget loyalty. And look at what Avernus accomplished by studying the joining ritual. What improvements might other mages make with resources of lyrium and volumes upon volumes of texts the likes of which we saw in the Ferelden Circle? We’ll never know because the Wardens keep everything buried.

———
I don’t think that everything the Wardens do is a good idea, and they make some pretty crappy missteps of their own, but hating them all outright is pretty much completely ridiculous. I hate the templar order, but I certainly don’t hate all templars. I may not like everything the Wardens do, but I don’t hate all Wardens.Jory took a risk and he chickened out, and I don’t really feel all that badly for him. If he’d actually paid attention to anything leading up to the Joining instead of just thinking he was going to be getting some prestigious position then he might have been able to back out before he was past the point of no return. He wasn’t conscripted! If he’d been conscripted against his will, I would have a lot more sympathy for him. Was Duncan supposed to just let him go on his merry way and risk having him divulge things that people aren’t supposed to know unless they’re a member of the order? That would have been dangerous. There are good reasons why they keep a lot of things secret. They deal with a lot of things that the average person wouldn’t understand. High ranking officials are privy to some of their secrets, though it seems to be largely on a need-to-know basis. Also, even though they’re supposed to be independent, the Chantry exerts huge pressure on them. If the Chantry knew the half of what the Wardens were involved in, do you think they’d let them continue? I’m sure that certain key officials know some things out of necessity, and that’s probably as much as they can afford to risk. A lot of their practices involve borderline or outright blood magic or related subjects, and you know the Chantry’s stance on that. I mean, they’re experimenting and messing with Darkspawn blood. They’re tainting people, technically. They’re SPREADING the taint, for necessary reasons. We now know what happens to Grey Wardens when they go for their Calling. I’m sure the Chantry would be super-down with all that, considering the whole Darkspawn issue is the official big reason why they hate mages so much in the first place. Not to mention, do you think anyone would willingly sign up if they knew what goes on in the Wardens? They already have a hard time recruiting. They already make use of criminals and other people that wouldn’t otherwise be contributing much to society (in jail, dead, preying on others—Duncan was one of those people himself, once), and they’re still coming up short. The Wardens, by their nature, engage in a lot of taboo things out of necessity. For that reason, they need to be above repercussions of what they’re doing, because it’s not always ‘legal’.And it’s not like they can give out their secrets and then take them back if it goes really badly. Once stuff is out in the open, that’s it. They’ve blown it. Then who defends against the Blights? They can’t predict what will happen if they start slipping secrets to the wrong people, and how do you know who to trust? Whatever his reasons, regardless of how right or wrong it was to do so or how much good he thought he was doing, Loghain betrayed his own king and best friend. Would he have shown more loyalty to the Wardens? It’s not good or kind or fair or pretty. But it’s either that or let the Blights destroy everything. It’s making the best of a crappy situation. Love them or hate them, flaws and virtues, they have good reasons for what they do, much of the time. They don’t make easy choices. ‘Sacrifice’ is in their credo. There’s a reason they’re called Grey Wardens.
